Yes, really. It's terrible. But I take comfort in a friend paraphrasing his guest appearance on The Simpsons: his work here is done... The cosmic ballet goes on.
And he was, in fact, just as he seemed: the rest of the ST cast was amazed that the kindest man ever (Nimoy) could be best buddies with one of the biggest jerks that they ever met (Shatner).
Case in point: when Nimoy learned that Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) was paid less than the rest of the supporting cast, he bitched out the payroll department until they relented and have her equal earnings. Y'know, it's that kind of proactive goodness, done for no other benefit than doing the right thing, that says a lot about someone's character.
If someone ever told me a bad story about Nimoy, I would flat-out disbelieve anything short of a video recording... I hope he's in a better place.
