QftWo 8/19-8/25: Imposters #6 - Kick-Ass 2

One of my filmic pet peeves is that many movie posters are just big pictures of the stars' faces.

Such is the case with this Summer's After Earth - one of the main sucktastic images that inspired me to start noticing film posters during my commute. It's basically saying "Will Smith is in this, so just go see it; we don't have to reveal anything else about our work because we know that's all it takes and that's how much effort we'll put into our marketing..."

Now, the theatrical poster for Kick-Ass 2 is incredibly similar, following that same principle, but to a higher level because it doesn't even bother to have a tagline or anything. See?:

It's just a bigtime close-up of the leads' faces! All it tells me is the name of the film and that two people wear masks on their faces. Also, that the guy has green eyes, and the woman has blue eyes and purple hair. We don't even get the actors' names, and this represents a serious surfeit of information...

And yet it's still somewhat different from the general trend in that these two leads aren't stars! Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloƫ Grace Moretz aren't big names in the industry. Johnson's done 7 pictures before the first Kick-Ass in 2010, and another 4 between that and last week's release of K-A 2. Moretz has done 9 films between both Kick-Ass movies, and 10 before that, which is actually impressive since she's not yet 17...

In this case, it's actually riding on the name recognition of its predecessor, I guess, since the first entry made $96M on a $30M budget. While it's not as bothersome as my usual issues with such posters, it still fails to deliver any info and doesn't give me a reason to be piqued by this fictitious world unless I'm already into it...
