Reviewing with Others Pt. 50: Short Term 12

In early June, I was invited to a screening for an indie movie called Short Term 12. I didn't know anything about the cast or the director. I just knew that it took both the Grand Jury Award and the Audience Award at SXSW 2013.

I'm so glad that I was game for something different and unexpected, as it's easily one of the finest films I've seen all year. This drama was exceptional, with great writing, important subject matter, and a lot of humor to balance out the pathos.

How much did I like ST12? It's a must-watch, and I hope it gains more awards and attention following its release date, August 23rd. I also genuinely think that this movie should be played in schools.

But enough freebies - my review was published today and you can read it here at Man, I Love Films.

  1. Hi,Thaddeus, thought it was time to check your blog out! Short Term 12 looks like a great movie and I'll read your longer review of it at Man,I Love Films(cool title, btw).

I noticed amongst your links Kermode's movie reviews-I've seen some of his clips on YouTube and enjoy his take on film(especially the bad ones)quite a lot. Will read some more here, particularly that Harry Potter related post(yes, I am a HP fan)with keen interest.

    1. Thank you so much! It's weird and fun to see a familiar template with completely different material, isn't it? Yeah, I think the guys who founded that site chose that name so they could call their podcast "The MILFcast." Sigh, I can never abbreviate their name...

Kermode is amazing, actually. The guy sneers at 3D whenever he can, let his date walk out of The Exorcist on her own (wow), and he has tons of passion about and knowledge of film (a film PhD, even). He's not perfect, but his opinions are always worth hearing.

I've only mentioned the Potter movies a few times. I read through the book series (of course), but I didn't like how much was removed for the films, so I think #4 was the last HP film I saw.

Chime in!
